Definition
The EMS Engineer – Level III is an expert pertaining to energy management / building automation industry from the viewpoint of a controls engineer. EMS Engineer – Level III will perform work under the guidance and leadership of the Engineering Manager, Engineering Team Leaders, and Project Manager(s). All work must meet or exceed the requirements of the LSI Installation and Commissioning Standards.
The EMS Engineer – Level III responsibilities include but are not limited to: all EMS Engineer – Level I & II responsibilities, complete project engineering duties from start to finish (less quality checks by Team Leader or Engineering Manager prior to submission), LSI engineering standards checks generated by Level I & II engineers, expert knowledge of WebCTRL system throughout, Tridum/JACE controls engineering knowledge, enhanced understanding of Central Utility Plants, and assistance with department leadership.
The same as the EMS Engineer – Level II, Level III engineers will train, assist, and self-perform controls project start-up and commissioning. EMS Engineer – Level III can be asked to perform troubleshooting, testing and commissioning on BMS alongside assigned EMS Technicians. The EMS Engineer – Level III will be able to coordinate work with other trades (i.e. electricians, HVAC technicians) and must have the ability to complete assigned work according to project schedules, financial budgets, priorities, and required processes.
Responsibilities
All EMS Engineer – Level I & II Responsibilities plus the following:
Basic Skills / Leadership:
- Provides daily and weekly communication to Team Leader or Engineering Manager along with milestones.
- Enforces LSI Engineering Standards throughout all assigned tasks (self and lower level engineers).
- Reads and understands project scopes of work, equipment submittals, controls specs, and sequences of operation.
- Ability to compose professional documents without assistance or quality checks. Has earned full trust of Team Leader and Engineering Manager.
- Highly respected by peers as a leader within the department.
- Can follow and lead project processes as project requires.
- Seeks input from teammates on critical decisions. Shares credit with team upon success. Shares lessons learned if needed.
- Uses benchmarks and performance measures to track individual progress. Communicates results and slips to Team Leader and Engineering Manager.

Technical / Submittals / Databases / Software / Graphics / Documentation / Processes / Deviations:
- Manage Multi-site Databases, NATing, and Hierarchal Servers.
- Understands and can manipulate managers for Plants / HW / CHW / AHUs.
- Understanding of advanced mechanical systems (storage, loops, built-ups).
- Full understanding of third-party interfaces, start to finish without assistance.
- Versed in Modbus, BACnet, and all other necessary protocols.
- Creation of managers with the overseeing by Team Leader and Engineering Manager.
- Understand redundancy needs for systems.
- Create and write SOO’s based on field verification of equipment from scratch.
- System optimization and energy savings.
- Understand function of PID control and tune parameters to optimize.
- Versed in ALC Add-Ons (ER, EI, FDD, OFVI, & Trend Export).
- Understands all lighting contactors, photocells, and lighting FBs.
- Assists in development and checking of Engineering Standards with Team Leaders and Engineering Manager.
- Can perform and enforces full systems checks / logic simulation prior to transmitting to field.
- Stays updated on ALC graphics libraries, drivers, add-ons and WC versions.
- Versed in Chiller optimization, Axcelerate, and IntelliSuite Analytics Solution.
- Creates complex programming, heartbeat, cost calculations, DCIM, exposure.
- Can build custom graphics – Floorplan / 3D / Iso / Summaries / Tables / Gauges / Equipment.
- Performs project deviations / post mortems on completed, assigned projects.
- Uses project deviation results to assist Team Leaders and Engineering Manager with actual project information to provide to sales.
- Assists Team Leader/EM/PM with project schedule development at project assignment.
- Provides all necessary project closeout documents to team for WebCTRL adds.
- Communicates completion (partial & final) to project team in a timely fashion.
- Creates personal documents/records of lessons learned to achieve efficiency.
