EMS Engineer – Level II

Definition

 

The EMS Engineer – Level II is accountable for knowing the fundamentals of the energy management / building automation industry from the viewpoint of a controls engineer.  EMS Engineer – Level II will perform work under the guidance and leadership of the Engineering Manager, Engineering Team Leaders, Project Manager(s), and EMS Engineers – Level III.  All work must meet or exceed the requirements of the LSI Installation and Commissioning Standards.

 

The EMS Engineer – Level II responsibilities include but are not limited to: all EMS Engineer – Level I responsibilities, unassisted project submittal generation, LSI engineering standards updates, control protocol knowledge for third party integration, intimate knowledge of WebCTRL setup and parameters, early understanding of CHW, HW, & Domestic water systems, electrical one-line diagram competence, air pressure systems and components, and leadership progress.

 

The same as the EMS Engineer – Level I, Level II engineers will assist or self-perform controls project start-up and commissioning. EMS Engineer – Level II can be asked to perform troubleshooting, testing and commissioning on BMS alongside assigned EMS Technicians. The EMS Engineer – Level II will be able to coordinate work with other trades (i.e. electricians, HVAC technicians) and must have the ability to work according to project schedules, financial budgets, priorities, and required processes.

 

Responsibilities

 

All EMS Engineer – Level I Responsibilities plus the following:

 

Basic Skills / HVAC / Electrical / Leadership:

  1. Can produce complete engineering submittal package, database, graphics, programming, and close-outs unassisted less a quality check.
  2. Understands importance and abides by wire label standards within EMS submittals and panel drawings.
  3. Understands and communicates proficiently in thermodynamics and refrigeration.
  4. Can read, follow, and understand electric schematics and one-line drawings.
  5. Utilizes all financial, scheduling, and tasking tools available to the engineering team.
  6. Identifies problems and understands issues before others.  Develops plan for discussion and execution.
  7. Understands and communicates process for temperature and humidity control.
  8. Works methodically to complete tasks assigned within budget and on schedule.
  9. Appropriately uses time and resources to plan manpower.  Prioritizes duties and requests assistance when needed.
  10. Responsive to all communication and requests from others in a timely manner.

Technical / Submittals / Databases / Software / Graphics / Documentation / Processes:

  1. Intelligently gathers all information from sales, site visits, and turnover meetings for projects assigned.
  2. Understands, utilizes, and relays importance of LSI programming libraries and standards.
  3. Can add equipment and modules to site database.  Can effectively export and import clippings.
  4. Ability to obtain information and program all interface equipment, regardless of protocol.
  5. Can read, understand, write, and verify sequences of operations as described by spec or operators.
  6. Manage entire project database and multiple clippings for phased projects without assistance.
  7. Understands basic mechanical piping and ducting.  Understands electrical principles for wiring components.
  8. Complete understanding of WebCTRL Setup, Source Trees, Conditional Expressions, and Network Points.
  9. Understands system integrations (optimum start/stop, LAN shutdown, 4CP).
  10. Enhanced knowledge of differential pressure, duct and building static pressure.
  11. Communicates needs for discussions/potential change orders due to scope gaps found during project review.
  12. Early interest and understanding of central plant systems.
  13. Consistently utilizes standard programs, symbols, and graphics for work efficiency and productivity.
  14. Enforces proper system backup retrieval / communication prior to beginning system alteration / work.
  15. Follows department protocol for management/team leader check on all work before publishing 100%.
  16. Closely watches each assigned project budget for labor and material costs.  Presents potential deviations to management for review.
  17. Reports and documents all gains/losses per project to Engineering Manager.
  18. Keeps close relationship with assigned project manager for schedule updates and needs.
  19. Ensures all project email correspondence is recorded/saved and always includes the Project Manager assigned.
  20. Consistently updates all reporting and scheduling tools/reports with progress, dates, and slips.
  21. Communicates to Engineering Manager if project slips occur or if help is needed to hit deadlines.
  22. Sets self-goals to complete assigned tasks and improve processes and knowledge.  Communicates progress and results to Team Leaders and Engineering Manager.
